Adaptive Radiations: Competition Rules for Galápagos Gastropods
نویسندگان
چکیده
New islands present the perfect opportunity for a species to get a fresh start and undergo adaptive radiation. For Galápagos land snails, both competition and resource diversity have together led to opportunity knocking twice.

Ecological opportunity and predator–prey interactions: linking eco-evolutionary processes and diversification in adaptive radiations
Much of life's diversity has arisen through ecological opportunity and adaptive radiations, but the mechanistic underpinning of such diversification is not fully understood. Competition and predation can affect adaptive radiations, but contrasting theoretical and empirical results show that they can both promote and interrupt diversification. A mechanistic understanding of the link between micr...
متن کاملEquilibrium and non‐equilibrium dynamics simultaneously operate in the Galápagos islands
Island biotas emerge from the interplay between colonisation, speciation and extinction and are often the scene of spectacular adaptive radiations. A common assumption is that insular diversity is at a dynamic equilibrium, but for remote islands, such as Hawaii or Galápagos, this idea remains untested. Here, we reconstruct the temporal accumulation of terrestrial bird species of the Galápagos u...
متن کاملA new mechanism for recurrent adaptive radiations.
Models of adaptive radiation through intraspecific competition have attracted mounting attention. Here we show how extending such models in a simple manner, by including a quantitative trait under weak directional selection, naturally leads to rich macroevolutionary patterns involving recurrent adaptive radiations and extinctions. Extensive tests demonstrate the robustness of this finding to a ...
متن کاملEvolution of character displacement in Darwin's finches.
Competitor species can have evolutionary effects on each other that result in ecological character displacement; that is, divergence in resource-exploiting traits such as jaws and beaks. Nevertheless, the process of character displacement occurring in nature, from the initial encounter of competitors to the evolutionary change in one or more of them, has not previously been investigated. Here w...
متن کاملEcological opportunity in adaptive radiation of Galápagos endemic land snails.
The classic evolutionary hypothesis of ecological opportunity proposes that both heterogeneity of resources and freedom from enemies promote phenotypic divergence as a response to increased niche availability. Although phenotypic divergence and speciation have often been inferred to be the primary consequences of the release from competition or predation that accompanies a shift to a new adapti...
